Imagine seeing an arcade cabinet of an unusual look that has you a little scared, but rather interested. A poster is seen above this game with its quirkiness, a blond-haired male being with a disfigured face having his palms around a smaller iteration of a different male character, which had unusual black markings around his mouth, donned in black and gold armor, unlike the other larger individual, in indigo, lilac and dark blued armor. A black and red flag was also seen with the said title in the same white text as the poster.
As you look at the screen of the attract mode of the game, there is a twist of colorfulness, but rather foreboding with the same male in the red-orange hair, using his sword to hack away evil beast and things within his sight. You also saw a preview of a boss fight of another being that has red and black armor, smaller than the red-haired character, laughing and screeching with malice. This enemy also wielded a sword, but can throw knives. He darts to and fro along with flipping with his sword. The feeling of the game is etheral, but omnipresent.
This game you see, is part of Genpei Toumaden, known as The Genji and Heike Clans.
So What's Genpei Toumaden/The Genji and Heike Clans?
The Genji and Heike Clans was first released on October 1st, 1986 via arcade cabinets in Japan by Namco. This very first game was also later on released via the PC-Engine (Japanese counterpart of the Turbografx16) and the Sharp X68000, only in Japan, until ten years later in 1996 when Namco Museum Volume 4 was up, the first game being in the U.S. for the first time, despite the Ka No Ni Sequel aka Samurai Ghost, released in 1992, for both the PC-Engine and Turbografx-16 in Japan and America. In October 7th of 2021, the Arcade Archives of the first game was released on the Nintendo Switch. There's also a Famicom (Japanese counterpart of the NES) virtual board game spinoff that came out in 1988, but only in Japan too.
The Plot:
You play as the main character, the valiant, timid, boisterous, and quick-tempered Taira No Kagekiyo (also known as Kazusa No Shichiro or Akushichibyoye No Kagekiyo, based off of the historical figure ), a fallen Heike/Taira samurai commander of the Third Camp of the Taira, adopted from the Fujiwara Clan, that is a wraith. Generally, he has to get the Three Sacred Treasures, three notable historical treasures known to Japan, called the Sword (Kusanagi-No-Tsurugi), the Twisted Jewel, and the Mirror, to defeat the demonic Minamoto No Yoritomo, shogun of the Genji/Minamoto Clan, as to avenge his fallen clan. However, there's a catch, it's not just Yoritomo who is present within the clan during his revival, but also his underlings, Saito Musashibo Benkei, Minamoto No Yoshitsune, and Kiso No Yoshinaka. Kagekiyo must defeat these lackeys in order to reach Kamakura, the capital back in the time period of 1192, where Yoritomo sits awaiting at a temple.
